Johann Sebastian Bach's famous "Goldberg Variations" are on the program for the 2nd Forbach ensemble concert of the 25/26 season. Bach published them in printed form in 1741 as the fourth part of his "keyboard-ûbung". The variations, originally intended for a two-manual harpsichord, are based on an aria with a slow sarabande rhythm, already found in the "Clavier-Bûchlein für Anna Magdelena Bach" kept from 1725. It is now known that this aria was only added later, in 1740. The "Goldberg Variations" owe their popular nickname to Bach's first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel. Forkel reported in 1802, probably based on the memories of Bach's eldest sons, that the work had been commissioned by Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk for his protégé Johann Gottlieb Goldberg Keyserlingk, then Russian Ambassador to the Court of Dresden, who was a great admirer of Bach. His protégé Goldberg was first trained by Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, before studying directly with Bach in Leipzig from 1741 to 1746. In this concert, the "Goldberg Variations" will be performed in a 1984 arrangement for string trio by Dimitri Sitkovetsky. The Russian violinist and conductor dedicated this version to the memory of the great Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, who launched his career in 1955 with a recording of the "Goldberg Variations".
This work will be performed by : Ulrike Hein-Hesse , violin Benjamin Rivinius , viola Theodor Rusu, cello
