USSR, 1966: the Soviet authorities commission Sergei Paradjanov to make a film on the life of Sayat Nova, an 18th-century Armenian poet. Much to the chagrin of the authorities, the filmmaker delivered a surrealist film of sumptuous allegorical tableaux, a vibrant tribute to the culture of the Caucasus. Jonathan Seilman has imagined a veritable ceremony in his honor, with a lighting design reminiscent of the performing arts, a quadraphonic sound system, music invented from a varied instrumentarium (led by analog and modular keyboards) played in alternation with the sound of the film... and Anne Careil as priestess of this strange poetic parade.
