Un Dimanche, Une Oeuvre - Rendez-vous around major works in the exhibitions

By Deborah Laks, art historian

Louise Nevelson unifies her materials under a layer of paint, so much so that forms appear mainly by their contours. However, as soon as we move around, irregularities appear on the assembled pieces of wood: we perceive textures, dents that signal their previous lives. Provenance and use are still present beneath the paint, which nevertheless tempers the multitude of information contained in these traces of the past. Something else emerges in the work, a harmony that depends on much more than the sum of its parts, a coherence nourished by seemingly infinite variations. Together, we'll take a look at the way Louise Nevelson conducts the salvaged material, like a conductor directs her orchestra, maintaining the specific timbres of each element while at the same time creating a clear symphonic line that we'll try to grasp and understand.

Free admission on presentation of the day's exhibition ticket.
