On Saint Alphonse's Day, Alphonse Marjavel is the happiest of men. He welcomes Jobelin, his ex-best friend and lover of his ex-wife, and his niece Berthe.
His new best friend, Ernest, lives with him for the summer and acts as his partner in the ladies' club. As for Ernest, he's Alphonse's wife Hermance's partner.
Then a couple of Sarthe servants, Omer and Mariette, arrive, and through their ignorance, they cause all these little arrangements between friends to implode...
