Oh, rage! Oh, despair! Oh, enemy old age!
Jean Bellorini, director of the Théâtre National Populaire de Villeurbanne—who was welcomed to Le Carreau in 2023 with a remarkable Italian-language production of Molière’s *Tartuffe*—returns to Forbach to present, this time, a magical reimagining of *Le Cid*. He breathes new life into this iconic tragicomedy of the repertoire—with its grandiose characters and famous verses—by embracing the themes of dreams, playfulness, and childhood. On stage, in the midst of a moving bouncy castle that serves as their playground, two musicians and four actors and actresses bring the story to life like a fairy tale. They rediscover the characters’ adventures, Rodrigue’s dilemma, his impossible love for Chimène, the Infanta’s secret, the despair of an aging father, and the avalanche of questions that punctuate the play. Among the most famous: What is true honor? Or: What is the weight of love when a parent demands revenge? It is through imagination—that invisible and immeasurable force—that the performers convey these intimate and universally shared doubts. A moment of communion where classical theater meets our times, as well as a wonderful opportunity to (re)discover a masterpiece of French literature.
