Haydn and Mozart were bound by a mutual admiration.
From Haydn’s oeuvre, Swiss conductor Marc Leroy-Calatayud presents Symphony No. 55, posthumously subtitled “The Schoolmaster” due to its astonishing (and very commanding) Adagio. From the divine Amadeus, Claire Le Boulanger and Manon Louis, soloists with the Metz Grand Est National Orchestra, bring to life the miraculous Concerto for Flute and Harp. But these two giants of the 18th century must not overshadow the great female composers of the Classical and Pre-Romantic periods. Blind from childhood, Maria Theresia von Paradis (to whom Mozart dedicated his Piano Concerto No. 18) leaves us with vibrant and graceful music. Similarly, the French composer Sophie Gail was one of the most popular opera composers in 19th-century Paris. These are beautiful and essential rediscoveries.
