The lineup is a dream come true. On one side, today’s master of the keyboard, Fazil Say; on the other, trumpet virtuoso Lucienne Renaudin Vary.
Carrying on the glorious tradition of composer-performers, the pianist has composed a new concert piece for his colleague. The two musicians then set Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 ablaze. In this radiant gem, the trumpet weaves an exhilarating dialogue with the piano—at times energetic, at times humorous and biting. The excellent Basel Chamber Orchestra concludes this vibrant program with the Serenade for Strings, a tribute to the folk dances of Bohemia that Dvorák gave to his wife as a wedding gift.
