Blending transalpine influences with contrapuntal richness, Dietrich Buxtehude’s motet *Jesu meines Lebens Leben* is a deeply moving meditation on death, by turns passionate and luminous.
Regarded across the Rhine as two of the finest early music ensembles, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Voces Suaves then bring to life Reinhard Keiser’s *St. Mark Passion*, which Bach himself conducted (and arranged) on several occasions. A masterpiece of conciseness and drama—so much so that it was attributed to the great Johann Sebastian himself!
The famous *Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir* (one of the first, if not the very first, cantatas written by Bach) opens this exceptional program.
