"Gone, but not forgotten: Saint-Victor Church in Metz, on Rue au Blé—an archaeological rediscovery."
In 2025, a preventive archaeological excavation conducted in connection with the installation of a new underground recycling drop-off point at the end of the cul-de-sac on Rue au Blé revealed the remains of the former Saint-Victor Church. Demolished in 1828 to make way for the completion of the current covered market, this church was one of the oldest religious buildings in Metz and dated back at least to the second half of the 8th century.
Archaeological research has provided a better understanding of the history and evolution of this building thanks to the discovery of several construction phases. The excavations also uncovered several graves inside the church. This presentation will review the main findings of the excavation and what they reveal about the history of this neighborhood in Metz.
