In 2028, we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Adolphe Blanc’s birth. Who remembers this violinist, who was nevertheless a prominent figure during the Second Empire? If he has faded from memory, it is largely because he favored chamber music at a time when opera was all the rage. His Septet is imbued with an elegant and effusive romanticism that, thanks to the clarinet, might be compared to that of Carl Maria von Weber. This delightful piece will sit right at home alongside Beethoven’s Septet, as it features the same instrumentation.
It is also a very pleasant score, the work of a brilliant young musician adored by the Viennese public, with a tone quite different from the intensity that would characterize the string quartets and piano sonatas he would write twenty years later.
