*La Misérable* sheds light on the woman in Victor Hugo’s shadow, Juliette Drouet, chronicling 50 years of passionate love and mutual influence.
It is the story of the docility of a rebellious woman who took it upon herself to support the greatest poet of all time so that he could complete his life’s work. Juliette is his heroine, his muse, his passion, his scribe, his inspiration—but also his prisoner. Victor locked her away in a maid’s room for 14 years so she would be his alone. During her captivity, she wrote him thousands of letters, all the while remaining his eternal support, devoted body and soul. Two inseparable souls bound by a secret and obsessive love, for better or for worse!
