As part of our partnership with the Autonome bookstore and pastry shop in Forbach, author Marc Maillot will be presenting his book *La Mine*, illustrated by Jérôme Agostini, on June 13 at 3:00 p.m., in the Salle des Pendus, at the heart of the Les Mineurs Wendel Museum.
Event schedule
2:00 p.m.: Free, self-guided tour of the Les Mineurs Wendel Museum before the presentation (optional)
3:00 p.m.: Discussion with the author in the Salle des Pendus, followed by a book signing (books available for purchase on site)
4:00 p.m.: Tour of the La Mine Museum (fee required, reservations at the reception desk) (not mandatory)
Presentation of the book “La mine”
Published in September 2025 and illustrated by Jérôme Agostini, “La mine” tells the story of miners facing a collapse deep underground, and the many questions it raises within them.
“Veyron [the main character] investigates. The disaster, and soon, himself. The others are pondering as well. Coal-mining France is dying out.
But what comes after the collapse? Traumas and desires rise from the depths.
Each goes their own way in this confinement. Introspection, dreams, quarrels, physical altercations... And metamorphoses?
La Mine is a noir, initiatory, Gnostic novel that draws on fantasy and mythology. »
The Author:
Marc Maillot holds a Ph.D. in Egyptology, served as a research fellow at the French section of the Sudanese Antiquities Authority, and led the Damboya archaeological mission in Sudan.
Now director and chief curator of the museum at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures at the University of Chicago, he is also an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Central Florida.
The Illustrator:
Jérôme Agostini is an illustrator and sketchbook artist. He has created numerous travel sketchbooks based on his time living abroad around the world (Burkina Faso, Haiti, Rome, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mayotte...). He is also the author of several books, notably Jacques Bertran’s Souvenirs de guerre trilogy, in which he illustrates his great-great-grandfather’s war diary from World War I.
