Do you remember what you were doing on August 11, 1999? Few of us remember, and yet on that day, a very rare astronomical event took place: a total solar eclipse.
On August 12, 2026, we’ll have the chance to experience this incredible moment once again—and the next time it happens will be in… 55 years! To make this a truly unforgettable experience, the City of Metz is pulling out all the stops and invites everyone to gather at the Plan d’Eau. Free distribution of certified eclipse glasses (1 pair per family).
Bring a blanket to lie down on the grass or folding chairs to enjoy this 55-minute natural spectacle.
To ensure that all Metz residents can admire this eclipse, the City of Metz will make certified eclipse glasses available free of charge starting Wednesday, August 5, at all neighborhood town halls (one pair per household upon presentation of identification).
Protect children’s eyes: The solar eclipse that will be visible in Metz (weather permitting) is considered total when the moon covers more than 90% of the sun’s surface. To view this phenomenon, it is essential to wear certified eclipse glasses; otherwise, painless but irreversible retinal damage may occur. It is therefore essential that adults inform children and vulnerable individuals of this risk and supervise them throughout the duration of the eclipse.
