Welcome to Grand Soldat hamlet, near Abreschviller. At first, it was called "Soldatenthal", meaning "Soldier Valley" thanks to a Mercury or Mars statue found there.

There used to be a forest railway in Grand Soldat which became a tourist railway later on. Midway, you may visit a former sawmill. Local celebrities were born in this hamlet such as Alexandre Chatrian (writer, philosopher 1826 - 1890). You may stop by his house and read further information about his life. He his known as "Erckmann-Chatrian", a surname he shared with his friend Emile Erckmann.
