Apart from the large structures armed with guns, the Maginot Line comprised a range of other facilities. A series of intermediate shelters were built to protect soldiers from bombing. There were two types: cavern-type shelters built deep underground, and surface shelters like this one. It was designed to house 52 men and was equipped with a power plant to provide light and ventilation, a coal stove, an infirmary, a telephone exchange and a filter room. Most of this equipment is still in working order.
