On site, you will find the trail under the following name: AUTOUR DE L’ÉTANG DES MARAIS
This hiking trail takes you around the beautiful "Étang des Marais", a central part of the Aquatic Maginot Line area.
The starting point is located in the commune of Rémering-lès-Puttelange, where you will find the first information board. Two military remains can still be seen there: the Redoute 117 memorial, commemorating the destruction during the battles of June 1940, and a dam.
The Étang des Marais is situated in the heart of the route and is an essential stop. Follow the path winding through the fields until you reach the dam, which also serves as a path for those wishing to complete the full loop around the pond. Like the five other ponds in the area, this one served as a reservoir, allowing the surrounding valleys to be quickly flooded. The dams enabled the area to be flooded within 36 hours.
A stop on the dam of the Étang des Marais (Marsh pond) offers a picturesque view of the water, the small fishing piers, and the surrounding nature. Information panels, two large wooden swings overlooking one of the best views of the pond, a playground, and a picnic area have been set up to make the place even more attractive.
This pleasant walk through fields and forests is popular with cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders who enjoy the rich natural heritage of this region. The historical significance of this site and the diversity of the surrounding flora and fauna make it a must-see in the Sarreguemines Confluences destination, just like the neighbouring ponds. All benefit from unspoiled nature, ideal for those seeking relaxation.
The hiking trail continues to the commune of Hilsprich, where you will find a second information board marking another starting point of the route. This also opens the way to the "In the Footsteps of the Marsouins" (Sur les Pas des Marsouins).
- Alternative route: Several loops around the pond are possible, with the shortest route being the "Walk around the Marais-Pond" (Le circuit de l'Étang des Marais - 5.5 km), which entirely circles the banks of the Étang des Marais. This route is ideal for a family outing. The loop around the pond is suitable for strollers and people with reduced mobility.
- Connections: 2.1 km to the "The Oak and the Reed" trail (Le Chêne et le Roseau - 12.2 km) around the Diefenbach Pond. Continuation to the "In the Footsteps of the Marsouins" trail (Sur les Pas des Marsouins - 13 km), partially around the Hirbach Pond. A second starting point is located in Saint-Jean-Rohrbach, with a 1.3 km connection.
- Trail-Marking: yellow rectangle
- Geographical area: Along the ponds of the aquatic Maginot Line
- Starting points: Rémering-lès-Puttelange > 25 Rue Saint-Jean – Town Hall or car park near Capfun campsite / Hilsprich > 20 Rue de l'Église – Stadium / Saint-Jean-Rohrbach > Rue Nationale – Church
