The Maginot Line: An Underground World to Explore
Built between the World Wars to protect the Franco-German border, the Maginot Line is one of the most ambitious military projects of the 20th century—and Moselle preserves some of the best-preserved fortifications in France.
The Gros Ouvrage du Hackenberg, nicknamed "the Monster of the Maginot Line," impresses immediately: 10 km of underground galleries to explore by vintage electric train, available 7 days a week by reservation. The Gros Ouvrage du Michelsberg offers over 2 hours of underground discovery, featuring a 265-ton turret that was the site of fierce battles in June 1940. The Gros Ouvrage du Galgenberg can be visited in guided tours in its original state, with a panoramic view of the Moselle Valley from the top.
More intimate, the Petit Ouvrage de l'Immerhof, nicknamed "Fort of the Frescoes," owes its name to the wall paintings left by soldiers in the galleries—touching testimonies of their daily lives. The Casemates du Huberbusch complete the experience for curious visitors who want to explore off the beaten path and grasp the scale of the defensive network along the border.

Energy in All Its Forms
Northern Moselle is also a unique place where past and present coexist in a striking way. From blast furnaces to nuclear reactors, the historical heritage reflects the major economic transformations of the 20th century.
Towering over the Moselle Valley with its cooling towers, the Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant is one of the most powerful in France. Educational tours are offered to understand how a nuclear power plant works, electricity production, and today's energy challenges. An exceptional site, accessible from middle school.
