Historic monument or place to visit in SAINT PRIVAT LA MONTAGNE, on the theme(s) Military interest, awarded with the Label Listed historic monument (MH).
More than 32,000 combatants were put out of action. The glacis between Sainte-Marie and Saint-Privat was named "the tomb of his guard" by the King of Prussia. From then on, the Army of the Rhine under Marshal Bazaine took refuge under Metz. After several unsuccessful attempts, it surrendered to the enemy on the following October 27. The country's main organized force had thus disappeared. Several necropolises contain the mortal remains of the combatants, and numerous monuments have been erected in their memory.
