More than 32,000 combatants were put out of action. The glacis between Sainte-Marie and Saint-Privat was named "the tomb of his guard" by the King of Prussia. From then on, the Army of the Rhine under Marshal Bazaine took refuge under Metz. After several unsuccessful attempts, it surrendered to the enemy on the following October 27.
