German conductor Kevin John Edusei takes us on a journey to an imaginary grand ball.

The result of a decade of ethnomusicological travels, the Dance Suite draws on the folk traditions that Béla Bartók studied and recorded in the Hungarian, Romanian, and Algerian countryside. Composed in 1934, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini showcases Sergei Rachmaninoff’s quintessentially Slavic lyricism. The impeccable technique of the great pianist Andrei Korobeinikov promises to magnify the lyricism of this dazzling work, which is often featured in films. The highlight of this exceptional program, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 is the magnificent crowning achievement of a composer who transcends the Beethovenian model.
