For this 10th edition, the focus is on the Age of Enlightenment, a period in history when classical French gardens dominated and coexisted with English-style gardens. The City of Metz’s gardeners invite us to “Cultivate Our Garden,” to journey back to the age of great discoveries, and to recharge our spirits in this space that lends itself to introspection and daydreaming. This year, the garden tells the story of the period leading up to the French Revolution, when the power of kings clashed with scientific reason and ideas of freedom.
“We must cultivate our garden,” a reference to Voltaire’s quote, is an invitation to improve one’s life through work and to seek happiness with simplicity. This garden also symbolizes the age of great scientific discoveries and inventions, including the hot-air balloon showcased by students from the Metz IUT School of Mechanical and Production Engineering.
Stroll through and admire the flowerbeds of the classic French gardens with their fountains and topiary-trimmed plants, made possible thanks to the Lingenheld company and the Metz Boulevard de Trèves association.
Take the time to sit among the exotic plants in the Orangery, with its benches redesigned by students from the Lycée de la Communication; you can also admire their artistic works highlighting the philosophy of the Enlightenment.
Stroll among the flowers in the English-style garden created by the apprentices at the CFA de Courcelles-Chaussy.
At night, marvel at the garden’s lighting design by SPIE and experience a whole new magical atmosphere!
