"Cimarron" is the third installment of a photographic project begun in 2010 by Charles Fréger and dedicated to masquerades. Spanning a geographical area that stretches from the southern United States to Brazil and encompasses fourteen countries, Charles Fréger compiles a non-exhaustive inventory of masquerades practiced primarily by the descendants of African slaves, celebrating the memory of their peers and their unique cultures.
Through masks, makeup, costumes, adornments, and accessories, African, indigenous, and colonial cultures intertwine, caught up in the dizzying whirl of a centuries-old syncretic movement.
