The Christian All Saints’ Day replaced the Celtic Samhain, which later became the Irish Halloween.
In the past, the Gauls celebrated Samhain for three nights and three days. Children in costume chased away wandering spirits, candles in the windows guided departed ancestors, and young people went from door to door to gather food for the great feast.
In French oral tradition, it is during this time that fairies and goblins appear in the countryside, standing stones shift, releasing their treasures, and white ladies prowl near ruined fortresses.
