Albert Kahn — The Archives of the Planet
Photographing the world to better understand it.
Born in Marmoutier in 1860, Albert Kahn became one of the great patrons of the arts of his time. Beginning in 1909, he devoted part of his fortune to an extraordinary project: photographing the peoples, landscapes, and ways of life around the world in order to raise awareness of them.
For more than twenty years, his photographers traveled across continents and brought back nearly 72,000 Autochrome photographs as well as about a hundred hours of film.
Through approximately 250 original photographs, historian Jean-Paul Lerch takes us on a journey through Albert Kahn’s life and this extraordinary visual record of the world at the beginning of the 20th century.
An invitation to journey into the world of yesterday and to reflect on a question that remains relevant today: Can gaining a better understanding of others help us live together more harmoniously?
