Gallo-Roman treasures, medieval painted ceilings, paintings by the Metz School and abstract art make up the richness of the Gallo-Roman, medieval and fine art collections.
Practical information
from METZ .
The Musée de la Cour d'Or takes its name from the palace of the kings of Austrasia that once stood in Metz. The Gallo-Roman archaeological collection is one of the most important in France, with ancient thermal baths preserved in situ. A maze of rooms and passageways leads from the 15th-century Chèvremont granary to the 13th-century ceilings or to the chancel of St-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, reputed to contain one of Europe's finest collections of Merovingian sculpture (7th century). The Fine Arts gallery features works by the Ecole de Metz (19th century) and artists from Metz and the Moselle region.
